AUTMUN FRAKTUR NOTE CARDS

The original artwork was done by me with colonial blue and sepia brown watercolors and outlined with sepia India ink. They were inspired by fraktur work of the Ephrata Cloister Illuminations done in the mid to late 18th century. This set consists of 6 cards / 2 of each print. I have used high-resolution copies of my original watercolors. They are printed on matte photo paper, cut with a decorative edge, and affixed to each card. A small label with the artist's information is on the back of the card. These sets are made from heavyweight brown cards and envelopes. The cards are 4" x 5.5".

~ Autumn Bird ~

Continuing the warm autumnal theme this month, I painted a bird perching amongst flowers in pale shades of orange, golden yellow, brown, and olive green. This was based on a PA German presentation fraktur ca. 1800. This painting is done on watercolor paper with artist quality watercolors and detailed with sepia India ink. Signed and dated: Lana Manis 2008. The overall size is 8 ¼” x 10 ¼”. It is framed behind glass, backed with brown paper, and has screw eyes and wire for hanging. The folk art frame was made by painting it bittersweet orange, applying a brown paint and then making a design with a combing tool that I made. Last, a beeswax finish was applied and then hand buffed.

~ Harvest Blessings Turkey ~

If you are on my mailing list or have read my blog, you know the story about Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, the eastern wild turkeys that my Australorp hen hatched from eggs 4 years ago. At a couple months old, they feathered out, and I turned them loose, never to be penned up again… but they stayed, roosting in the trees at night above the pen and later, moving to the tree in front of our porch, eating and taking dirt baths with the chickens, and pecking on the front door if I was a little late turning the chickens out in the mornings. So, it was inevitable that a turkey would end up in my artwork.
For this piece, I mixed the colors to get light to dark shades of sepia with a touch of pale, pale salmon for a mostly monochromatic look. This painting is done on watercolor paper with artist quality watercolors and detailed with sepia India ink. Signed and dated: Lana Manis 2008. The overall size is 7 ½” x 9 ½”. It is framed behind glass, backed with brown paper, and has screw eyes and wire for hanging. The wooden frame has been painted black, and then a brown paint was applied and wiped away from all but the crevices. Last, a beeswax finish was applied and hand buffed. The back reads: “Inspired by frakturs of the 1700s and 1800s and by an eastern wild turkey that lives on our property on the Cumberland Plateau in Tennessee. Lana Manis 2008”
